'The 'Door is the entrance to the Other World, where the Other Mother and all her creations reside. It can only be opened with a single black button key.

Appearance[]

The door is a small crawlspace located in the Pink Palace Apartment living room that the Jones family moves into. Normally, it opens to a brick wall, but when the Other Mother's rat summons a child, it opens into a mysterious hallway with blue and purple hues.

Biography[]

As Coraline explores her new living room, she sees the doll in front of a wall. Upon finding the door behind the wallpaper, Coraline asks her mother to open it. She is disappointed when it reveals a brick wall, but Mel states it was probably blocked off when the building was divided into apartments. That night, however, Coraline was woken up by a rat, which led her back to the door; upon opening it she instead saw a passage to the Other World.

During the final confrontation with the Other Mother, Coraline slams the Other World's exit on her hand, severing it. In her frenzied attempts to break down the locked exit, the Other Mother shortens the passageway between worlds, but Coraline closes and locks the entrance in time. With the black key disposed of by Coraline and Wybie, the door to the other world will likely stay closed forever.

Book Differences[]

The door in the book is described as a large door carved of brown wood. When Coraline opens it at night, it leads to a dark hallway with a musty smell.

Trivia[]

It was director Henry Selick's idea to change the shape of the door for the film, because he thought a big wooden door was too obvious. In a commentary track on the Coraline DVD, Selick reminisces about a small door in one of his grandmother's houses: ". . . And that was always a very frightening door. It was locked and no one would tell me what was on the other side. It evolved to where this small door seemed less threatening at first and more inviting, more kid size. Anyway, that's how it changed."
